Choosing the Right Elastic for Pants, Petticoats, Jeans and Masks

Pant elastic, petticoat elastic, jeans elastic and mask elastic each behave differently. A Chennai elastic shop's guide to picking the right width and grade.

Choosing the Right Elastic for Pants, Petticoats, Jeans and Masks

Elastic is one of those things tailors grab without thinking, and then wonder why a waistband goes loose after three washes or a mask snaps in a week. The truth is that elastic is not one product. The grade, width and weave change completely depending on whether it is going into a petticoat, a child's pant, a pair of jeans or a face mask. As an elastic shop in Chennai that supplies the trade, here is how we tell customers to choose.

Pant elastic and petticoat elastic

For petticoats and most ladies and kids pants you want a soft woven elastic, usually 3/4 inch to 1 inch wide. Soft woven elastic stays flat against the skin, does not curl inside the casing, and survives repeated washing without going dead. Avoid the cheap hard braided elastic for petticoats: it narrows when stretched and digs into the waist.

Width matters for comfort. A wider 1 inch band spreads the pressure and is kinder on the waist for daily-wear petticoats and salwars. You can see the range of elastics we stock, from soft woven to button-hole types.

Jeans elastic and heavy waistbands

Jeans, track pants and maternity wear often use a heavier knitted or button-hole elastic. Button-hole elastic has slots along its length so you can fit an adjustable button inside the waistband, which is why it is the standard for kids jeans and growing children's wear. For elasticated denim waists, pick a thicker grade that does not lose tension under the weight of the fabric.

If a waistband needs to open and close rather than just stretch, elastic is not always the answer. A strip of velcro gives an adjustable closure that holds firm, and many tailors use it alongside elastic on uniforms and adaptive clothing.

Mask elastic and fine cord

Face masks and light craft work use a thin round ear-loop cord, usually 2mm to 3mm. It must be soft enough to sit behind the ear without cutting in, and it should keep its stretch. Round cord elastic is sold on small reels and is cheap by the box, so home stitchers and small units should buy a roll rather than a metre at a time. Browse our tailoring rolls where elastic, tape and bias all come in bulk reels.

A simple rule for buying

Soft and wide for petticoats and pants, heavy or button-hole for jeans and kids wear, fine round cord for masks. When in doubt, stretch a sample between your hands: good elastic returns to its length cleanly, dead stock stays loose.
