What Is a Pressing Hook? Pant Hooks and Bar Fasteners for Waistbands

Pressing hook, pant hooks and kambi hook explained. How the waistband hook and bar fasten trousers and skirts, and how to pick the right size in Chennai.

What Is a Pressing Hook? Pant Hooks and Bar Fasteners for Waistbands

Open a well made trouser and you will see two small metal pieces above the zip: a flat hook on one side and a bar on the other. That is the pressing hook, and it carries the real strain when you sit, walk and bend. The button is mostly for show. Get the hook wrong and the waistband gaps or pops open.

What a pressing hook is

A pressing hook, also called a pant hook or kambi hook in the trade, is a flat metal fastener pressed onto the trouser or skirt waistband. It has two parts: the hook that grips and the bar (the eye) it catches on. Because it sits flat, it does not show a bump under a shirt the way a round blouse hook would. This waistband hook is the standard fastener for formal trousers, school uniforms and skirts.

Pant hooks vs blouse hooks

People mix these up, but they are built for different loads. A small sew-on blouse hook is light and fine for the top of a blouse or saree fall. A pant hook is wider, stronger and made to take the pull of a waistband all day. Use the right one and the garment lasts; use a blouse hook on trousers and it bends within a week. Both, along with press buttons and bars, sit in our tailoring hooks range.

Sizes and finishes

Pant hooks come in a few widths and in nickel, black and antique finishes so they disappear against the waistband cloth. Heavier trouser fabric wants a broader, stronger hook; a light skirt takes a finer one. For elasticated or half-elastic waistbands you will often combine a hook with elastics, and a firm belt roll from our tailoring rolls keeps the whole waistband flat behind the hook.

Frequently asked questions

Cannot find your answer? Message us on WhatsApp and we will reply quickly.

What is a pressing hook?

A pressing hook is the flat metal hook and bar pressed onto a trouser or skirt waistband to fasten it under the button. It carries the strain so the waistband does not gap.

What is a kambi hook?

Kambi hook is the local trade name for a flat pant hook used on waistbands. It is the same fastener as a pant hook or waistband hook.

Can I use a blouse hook on trousers?

It is not advisable. A blouse hook is light and bends under a waistband load, so use a proper pant hook and bar that is made to take the strain.
